drill 48

the ‘K’ (2)

Objective: To develop the wicketkeeper’s technique for a high bouncing ball.

Equipment: One ball and set of stumps between two, cones.

Description: Set the practice up as in drill 47 but move the target zone back 1 m. The feeder needs to throw with slightly more force to get the ball to bounce just above waist height. This may mean they have to stand up. Players should have a go at six off-side takes first, then swap with their partners. They should then do six leg-side takes, before swapping roles again.

Coaching points: Players start in the basic stance. They then move their outside leg (off-side take) or inside leg (leg-side take) back and towards the line of the ball at a 45-degree angle from the stumps. They should turn their head and body towards the side they are moving to, so that the ball may be taken to the side of the body. This is known as the ‘K’ method because if you were to draw lines from the crease at 45-degree angles towards the off and leg side they would resemble the letter ‘K’. It may help to draw these in.

Progression: Mix up the feeds so that the wicketkeeper has to perform the ‘K’ on the off and leg sides at random.
